Rotch Finalist Entry – 2007

A kit of parts system for a new hotel that demonstrates and reinterprets the activities within. The system is a modified Insulating Concrete Form, which is designed to fit together with a variety of glazed rain screen face panels that represent the life of inhabitants. Views in and out of the building through standard glass panels, video representation of hotel activities are abstracted and displayed on led panels, and heat transfer is indicated through heat sensitive panels. The hotel itself serves to reinforce the experience of the pier, moving inhabitants along its length to a moment for observing the surrounding bay. The activated cladding experiments with memetics and the passing along of various idea sets from actor to actor. A scalar, maritime interpretation, moving away from building as symbolic object towards building as representation of real time activities and life experiences.
