Brownsville Charter School – Brooklyn, NY

A decaying vaudeville theater building in Brownsville is reinvigorated as a K-12 charter school. Elements of the dramatic and inspirational nature of the theater are carried into the building – major events throughout the structure are linked by way finding devices. Built-in elements act as experiential anchors, subtle forms with multiple interpretations become a bench here, and desk there, an enfolding ceiling element above. Inspired additionally by an arts based humanities program at the school, color schemes are based on interpretations of masterwork paintings, and formal expression pulls forward themes of contemporary installation art.
